The 6 fundamental principles of sustainable building design

The Whole Building Design Guide* recognises that ‘building construction and operation have extensive direct and indirect impacts on the environment’ and calls for an ‘integrated, synergistic approach that considers all phases of the facility life cycle’

The six principles:
– Optimise site / existing structure potential
– Optimise energy use
– Protect and conserve water
– Use environmentally preferable products
– Enhance indoor air quality
– Optimise operational and maintenance practices

Interestingly, the WBDG’s piece on sustainability sits alongside others on aesthetics, security and safety. Sustainability should not come at the cost of other factors, but should be integrated with them.
