Glasgow 2014 Velodrome

I recently did a post on the unveiling of the velodrome for the 2012 Olympics, and it’s a great way to incorporate my interest in cycling with architecture and construction.

The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and National Indoor Sports Arena, currently under construction in a regeneration area in Glasgow’s east end, is named in honour of Scotland’s most successful gold medal winning Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion.

The project has been designed by 3DReid and is being built by Sir Robert McAlpine. It will host both badminton and cycling events at the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games. In addition, there will be office space and a number of community facilities on offer, including sports halls, five a side pitches, roller-skate park and gym.

Its 250-metre track has been designed by Ralph Schumann, one of the world’s foremost track designers. With a permanent viewing capacity of 2,500 it will be able to attract some of the world’s top cycling events to Glasgow. Located in the east end of the city the facility will be in close proximity to Celtic Park, forming a sporting hub. Its legacy will see it play host to athletics, basketball, netball and volleyball in future years.

Many thanks for your comment. is a publisher, not an architectural practice, so I’m afraid I can’t offer you any advice on your velodrome design. However, if you get in touch with me via Twitter (@ESIBuilding) I may be able to introduce you to some people who can point you in the right direction… Best of luck with your thesis!

Hi is there any where i can find out more about the skate park?

    • Owen Philipson Says:

Hi Logan- the skate park was due to be in the centre of the velodrome- I don’t think the building is complete yet so there aren’t any contact details. Check out the 3Dreid website (link above) though- there were some design drawings there.
